Sado Island, Japan’s sixth-largest island, is rich in culture, history, and natural beauty. Once a thriving gold-mining hub, it has preserved its unique heritage through performing arts like Taiko drumming, puppet theater, and folklore festivals. The island is home to hundreds of Buddhist temples, Edo-period villages, and breathtaking landscapes, from terraced rice fields to mountain ranges. With its oceanic climate and quiet rural charm, Sado offers a rare glimpse into traditional Japan.

This island is also at the heart of an internationally recognized conservation effort to protect the endangered Crested Ibis, with successful reintroduction programs bringing the species back to the wild. Visitors can explore modern attractions such as the Silver and Gold Mine, the Toki Park for breeding Crested Ibises, hiking trails, and scenic beaches. A partnership with the Sado Island Tourism Association ensures that volunteers get the most out of their experience, with opportunities for adventure, cultural exchange, and environmental impact.

About the Organization

The program works with local communities and conservation groups to preserve Sado Island’s environment and cultural heritage. Established in 2019, it encourages volunteer participation in ecological restoration and cultural preservation through engaging and educational activities.

  • Collect wild herbs and leaves with local experts, learning how to clean, dry, and blend them into herbal tea and natural products.
  • Take part in fun, hands-on workshops to create herbal insect repellent, herbal juice, and charcoal-based toothpaste.
  • Take part in beach and nature cleanups through interactive competitions to remove plastic waste and debris.
  • Assist in light temple maintenance, gardening, and preparing activities for school groups visiting Chokokuji Temple.
  • Help operate a small shop selling local fair-trade products, souvenirs, and natural goods to support the temple and local organizations.
