Guatemala – Tropical Wildlife Rescue Center

Located in Antigua, Guatemala, this tropical wildlife rescue center focuses on the rescue, recovery, and relocation of exotic amphibians and reptiles. As a volunteer, you will play a key role in nursing injured animals back to health and preparing them for release into their natural habitat. The center also runs educational programs to raise awareness about wildlife conservation. Volunteers will work with species such as crocodiles, snakes, geckos, turtles, and more while contributing to vital conservation efforts.

Your Schedule at a Glance:

Arrival Day, Sunday: Arrival in Guatemala City and transfer to Antigua. Meet your host family or settle into accommodation.

Day 1, Monday: Join an orientation session at the Spanish Institute in Antigua covering cultural insights, safety, and volunteer responsibilities. In the afternoon, you’ll visit the rescue center for the first time.

Days 2-5, Tuesday-Friday:

  • Morning: Volunteer work at the rescue center, including animal care, feeding, cleaning enclosures, and assisting with visitor education.
  • Afternoon: Spanish lessons (if applicable) or free time to explore Antigua.

 

Days 6-7, Saturday-Sunday: Free time to explore local attractions or take weekend trips to sites like Lake Atitlán, Tikal, or Semuc Champey. The on-site team in Antigua can also help book tours.

Remaining Weeks: The remaining weeks will follow a similar schedule of volunteering Monday-Friday and having Saturday-Sunday free. Departure days are on a Saturday.

About the Organization
The Amphibian and Reptile Rescue Center in Antigua is dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and releasing exotic wildlife. The facility provides critical care to injured and confiscated animals, including reptiles and amphibians. It also promotes environmental education through school visits and public outreach, encouraging responsible conservation practices.

Volunteer Responsibilities
Volunteers assist with day-to-day operations at the rescue center, ensuring that animals receive proper care and their habitats remain clean and well-maintained. Participants may also be involved in educational initiatives to teach local communities about protecting endangered species.

  • Feeding and preparing food for reptiles and amphibians

Working hours vary slightly, but volunteers typically work 3-4 hours per day, Monday to Friday. Shifts take place in the morning or afternoon, depending on the project’s needs. If you want to add Spanish classes, they will be scheduled during your free time.

Daily Transportation: Volunteers can reach their project site in Antigua by walking or taking a bus, the most affordable options. Travel time ranges from 20 to 60 minutes each way, depending on the hone-stay location.

Important note: Work at animal care projects can be physically demanding. Volunteers should be prepared to work independently and take initiative.

Internet icon Internet: Internet is available at our Spanish Institute in Antigua. Wi-Fi is available at the home-stays, yet may be inconsistent.

Laundry icon Laundry: Laundry services are available through host families or local laundromats for a small fee.

Accommodations icon Accommodations: As a volunteer, you will stay with a pre-approved Guatemalan host family in Antigua, with the option of a shared room (1-3 same-gender roommates) or a private toom for an extra fee. Volunteers receive a house key and can come and go freely while respecting the family’s routine and rules. Host homes are 10-25 minutes from the institute by walking or bus, and families provide guidance on local transportation upon arrival.

Food icon Food: Host families and residences provide two meals per day (breakfast & dinner). Lunch is at the volunteer’s expense, with many affordable local options available. Guatemalan meals are centered on corn and cornmeal, primarily as tortillas, often served with black beans, rice, eggs, and cheese. Signature dishes include pepián (a thick meat and vegetable stew), chiles rellenos, and mosh (porridge). The diet is enriched with fresh fruits and vegetables like pineapple, mango, plantains, yuca, and carrots. Guatemala is also known for producing some of the world’s finest coffee.

Spanish Immersion Week—Highly Recommended Add-On
Begin your Guatemala adventure with an optional Spanish Immersion Week! Enjoy four hours of small-group Spanish classes Monday to Thursday, complemented by evening cultural activities. This program is a great way to connect with fellow volunteers and prepare for your volunteer work.

What’s Included in the Spanish Immersion Week:

  • Spanish Classes: 4 hours of group lessons per day (Monday–Thursday).
  • Accommodation: Stay with a host family in a shared room.
  • Meals: Breakfast and dinner provided daily.
  • Extra Night Stay: Accommodation provided between the immersion week and your volunteer program.
  • Important Note: If a suitable group at your language level cannot be formed, you will receive one hour of private tutoring for every two hours of group classes,
  • ensuring a tailored and effective learning experience.
