Greece – Greek Island Marine Conservation

Alonissos, part of the Northern Sporades islands, is a hidden gem in the Aegean Sea. Known for its lush greenery and crystal-clear waters, the island offers a perfect blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage. The National Marine Park of Alonissos and Northern Sporades is the largest marine protected area in Europe, home to diverse marine life, including the endangered Mediterranean Monk Seal. The island’s charming villages, scenic landscapes, and warm hospitality make it an ideal location for a meaningful volunteer experience. Visitors can explore ancient ruins, hike through verdant trails, and enjoy traditional Greek cuisine in local tavernas. The island’s commitment to sustainability and conservation aligns with the project’s goals, providing a unique opportunity to help protect marine ecosystems. Alonissos also boasts the first underwater museum in Greece, an ancient shipwreck accessible to advanced divers.

Arrival and Orientation

The Marine Conservation project in Alonissos starts every Monday, with arrivals required on the preceding Sunday. Book your travel to Alonissos, with the nearest airport in Skiathos. Travel options include:

• Athens to Agios Konstantinos port (2 hours), then ferry to Alonissos (4 hours).
• Athens to Volos Town port (4 hours), then ferry to Alonissos (4 hours).
• Athens to Skiathos International Airport (30 minutes), then ferry to Alonissos (2 hours).

A Local Team member will meet you at the pier and walk you to your accommodation (10 minutes). Orientation begins Monday morning, covering local culture, safety, project details, and opportunities to meet other volunteers.

Volunteers in the Marine Conservation program engage in a variety of activities designed to protect and preserve marine ecosystems. These include coastal and underwater cleanups, where volunteers remove debris and pollutants from the marine environment. Participants also take part in citizen science projects, collecting data on marine life in collaboration with local universities. Additionally, the program involves educational sessions on plastic waste management and recycling, inspired by the Precious Plastic movement, to promote sustainable practices in the community.

PADI Scuba Certifications: Start or advance your journey in scuba diving with PADI certification courses. Led by experienced instructors, you’ll explore the stunning underwater world of Alonissos, within Europe’s largest National Marine Park.

• Weekdays:
  08:30 – 09:30: Breakfast at the volunteer restaurant.
  10:00 – 15:00: Take part in the scheduled program and diving plan.
  15:30 – 17:30: Lunch break.
  18:00 – 19:30: Optional evening sessions on plastic waste recycling.
  20:00 – 22:00: Free time to explore the surroundings, have dinner, and enjoy the evening with fellow volunteers.
• Weekends:
  Free time to explore the island, relax, or engage in local activities.

Note: Volunteers with no diving experience will learn to dive before engaging in any underwater conservation activities. The program fee covers the cost of the required online and in-person training, full scuba equipment, and volunteer supervision from an experienced dive instructor. The diving and volunteer schedule may change because of the weather.

Internet: Free Wi-Fi is available at the volunteer accommodation.

Laundry: Laundry facilities are available for volunteer use.

Accommodations: Volunteers will stay in a traditional Greek-style villa near the beach, close to cafes, restaurants, and supermarkets. The guesthouse features twin rooms shared with another volunteer, offering sea breezes and garden views from private balconies. Rooms come with essentials for comfort, including a private bathroom, air conditioning, TV, refrigerator, and provided bedding and towels.

Food: A buffet breakfast is provided daily, including cereal, yogurt, fruits, jams, honey, bread, cakes, milk, tea, coffee, juices, eggs, and cheese. For lunch, volunteers can explore nearby restaurants and cafes, with a budget of around $15 to $20 daily. Dinner is also provided, featuring traditional Greek cuisine. Various diets, including vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, and lactose-free options, can be accommodated at prior notice.
