Join us in Alonissos, Greece, for a hands-on marine conservation program in Europe’s largest National Marine Park. This volunteer program blends adventure, learning, and community engagement with practical conservation efforts. You’ll take part in coastal and underwater cleanups, citizen science projects, and recycling seminars. Plus, you’ll earn a PADI scuba certification while exploring the stunning marine ecosystem that is home to dolphins, turtles, and the endangered Mediterranean monk seal.
Program Highlights
First Week Itinerary:
Day 1, Sun: Travel independently by bus and ferry to Alonissos Island. We will provide clear travel details. Our local team will meet you at the port and take you to your accommodation. Get settled in and meet other volunteers.
Day 2, Mon: Welcome orientation and Island tour.
Day 3-6, Tue-Fri: Scuba diving lessons and PADI certification. Certified divers will learn from professionals how to scuba dive and clean the ocean floor of debris. Also, learn the basics of underwater exploration and get certified.
Day 7-8, Sat-Sun: Free weekend. Volunteers have the day free to explore the island, engage in leisure activities, or take part in optional excursions or cultural tours organized by the program. Departure is on a Saturday.
Location of the Project: Alonissos Island, Greece
Project length: Minimum 1 week – Maximum 2 weeks
Arrival Airport: Athens International Airport (ATH) or closer Skiathos Airport (JSI), followed by a bus and ferry to Alonissos Island.
Volunteer Work: Marine conservation, underwater cleanups, plastic recycling, and citizen science research.
Age: Minimum 18
Number of Volunteers: Maximum 20
Important Note: The program offers a PADI diving certification that is recognized internationally. It caters to divers of all levels, from beginners to those with some prior experience, and even advanced divers. The program includes all the diving and volunteer equipment.
What’s Included
Accommodations: Volunteers will stay in twin rooms in a traditional Greek-style villa near the beach
Food: Two meals a day: breakfast and dinner (Local style, Vegetarian, gluten-free, and meals for lactose-intolerant are also available upon request).
Airport Transfers: Not provided, only pickup from the ferry port on Alonissos Island. We will provide clear travel directions to the island. See also Location section.
Orientation: Held the day after arrival with island tour.

What’s not Included
Flights, visas (if required), travel health insurance, lunch, transportation to and from Alonissos Island (around 80 EUR each way), personal expenses.
Alonissos, part of the Northern Sporades islands, is a hidden gem in the Aegean Sea. Known for its lush greenery and crystal-clear waters, the island offers a perfect blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage. The National Marine Park of Alonissos and Northern Sporades is the largest marine protected area in Europe, home to diverse marine life, including the endangered Mediterranean Monk Seal. The island’s charming villages, scenic landscapes, and warm hospitality make it an ideal location for a meaningful volunteer experience. Visitors can explore ancient ruins, hike through verdant trails, and enjoy traditional Greek cuisine in local tavernas. The island’s commitment to sustainability and conservation aligns with the project’s goals, providing a unique opportunity to help protect marine ecosystems. Alonissos also boasts the first underwater museum in Greece, an ancient shipwreck accessible to advanced divers.
Arrival and Orientation
The Marine Conservation project in Alonissos starts every Monday, with arrivals required on the preceding Sunday. Book your travel to Alonissos, with the nearest airport in Skiathos. Travel options include:
A Local Team member will meet you at the pier and walk you to your accommodation (10 minutes). Orientation begins Monday morning, covering local culture, safety, project details, and opportunities to meet other volunteers.
Volunteers in the Marine Conservation program engage in a variety of activities designed to protect and preserve marine ecosystems. These include coastal and underwater cleanups, where volunteers remove debris and pollutants from the marine environment. Participants also take part in citizen science projects, collecting data on marine life in collaboration with local universities. Additionally, the program involves educational sessions on plastic waste management and recycling, inspired by the Precious Plastic movement, to promote sustainable practices in the community.
Volunteer Tasks
PADI Scuba Certifications: Start or advance your journey in scuba diving with PADI certification courses. Led by experienced instructors, you’ll explore the stunning underwater world of Alonissos, within Europe’s largest National Marine Park.

Your schedule at a glance:
Note: Volunteers with no diving experience will learn to dive before engaging in any underwater conservation activities. The program fee covers the cost of the required online and in-person training, full scuba equipment, and volunteer supervision from an experienced dive instructor. The diving and volunteer schedule may change because of the weather.
Internet: Free Wi-Fi is available at the volunteer accommodation.
Laundry: Laundry facilities are available for volunteer use.
Accommodations: Volunteers will stay in a traditional Greek-style villa near the beach, close to cafes, restaurants, and supermarkets. The guesthouse features twin rooms shared with another volunteer, offering sea breezes and garden views from private balconies. Rooms come with essentials for comfort, including a private bathroom, air conditioning, TV, refrigerator, and provided bedding and towels.
Food: A buffet breakfast is provided daily, including cereal, yogurt, fruits, jams, honey, bread, cakes, milk, tea, coffee, juices, eggs, and cheese. For lunch, volunteers can explore nearby restaurants and cafes, with a budget of around $15 to $20 daily. Dinner is also provided, featuring traditional Greek cuisine. Various diets, including vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, and lactose-free options, can be accommodated at prior notice.
