Help preserve the ancient history of the area for generations to come, while having the experience of a lifetime! As a volunteer you will work with a team of professional archaeologists on a live excavation site. This program is suitable for students of archeology or anyone with an interest in historical and cultural preservation.


Program Highlights:

First Week Itinerary:

Arrival Day: arrival on a Sunday in Rome, pick up at the airport and resting time (or free time) at the volunteer accommodation in Rome.
Day 1, Mon: You will join an orientation session about Italy, travel and the volunteer program. On Monday afternoon/evening, volunteers will take the train heading to Civitavecchia, near the project location.
Day 2-5, Tues – Fri: Tour of the village (Allumiere), plus training on the excavation site and the work begins, continuing on the other days of the week. Free afternoons (after 4pm) and evenings, with the possibility of participating in workshops, local history lessons, evening outings, excursions and much more organized by the association.
Day 6, Sat: Departure Day for volunteers staying only one week. Otherwise, weekends are free for volunteers extending their stay.
Remaining Weeks: The remaining weeks will usually follow the schedule of volunteering Monday-Friday and having weekends free.

What’s not Included

Flights, visas (if required), travel health insurance, train from Rome to Civitavecchia (around 12 EUR), personal expenses (plan on 50 EUR per week).

This volunteer project is in the historic town of Allumiere, around 80 km from Rome. A small town of 3,873 inhabitants that contains important evidence of settlements dating back to the Bronze Age (2nd millennium BCE).

Accommodations icon Accommodations: Volunteers will stay in a rural estate called “La Farnesiana ” on the slopes of the Tolfa mountains. The estate covers an area of over 400 hectares, of which 200 are woodland and Mediterranean scrub. This is the typical habitat of Maremma cattle, an ancient breed, now at risk of extinction. In the area there are about 250 species, which live in the wild. The primary structure comprises a picturesque medieval village, a large neo-Gothic church from the mid-19th century, and an imposing 18th-century barn. You will share a same gender room with up to 6-8 volunteers, with shared bathrooms and showers.

Food icon Food: The staff prepares breakfast, lunch (picnic style) and dinner at the accommodation and restaurant of La Farnesiana. They can adapt the menu to vegetarian diets and any allergies, but it would be difficult to provide solely vegan food.

During the program, the local organization will organize nights out in the town of Allumiere and local hiking excursions in the nearby Tolfa mountains. Volunteers have weekends free to explore Rome and other exciting destinations in Italy. We can also arrange organized tours for an extra fee once in Italy.
