Argentina – Horse Volunteer & Animal Sanctuary

The first two days of orientation (Sunday to Monday) take place in Córdoba, Argentina, a city celebrated for its rich culture and history. With its vibrant atmosphere, historic landmarks, lively festivals, and warm hospitality, Córdoba offers a captivating introduction to Argentine life. Located a three-hour drive from the city and near the town of San Marcos Sierras, the horse sanctuary sits in the serene hills of Córdoba. Surrounded by lush meadows, forests, and mountain pastures, this tranquil setting is ideal for nature lovers, offering scenic hiking trails, rivers, and diverse wildlife.

About the Organization
Founded in 2013, this sanctuary addresses the plight of horses previously used for garbage collection under harsh conditions. By providing a safe haven, the sanctuary rescues, rehabilitates, and ensures a dignified life for these animals. The sanctuary, covering 312 hectares, is a hub for conservation, education, and collaboration, actively working with local authorities and institutions to advocate for animal welfare. The horses at the sanctuary are not ridden or used for any purpose; they are cared for solely to ensure their well-being and provide them with a peaceful environment.

About the Volunteer Work
Volunteers are integral to the sanctuary’s operations, supporting daily tasks that enhance the lives of over 200 animals, including horses, donkeys, pigs, rescued dogs and llamas. From feeding and grooming to habitat restoration, volunteers contribute to a nurturing and enriching environment. Training and supervision ensure that volunteers can confidently engage in meaningful activities.

• Feed, groom, and provide clean water for the animals.
• Assist with veterinary care and rehabilitation under professional supervision.
• Clean and maintain animal enclosures and shared spaces.
• Create and implement enrichment activities to improve animal welfare.

• Help with general maintenance, including repairing fences and other facilities.

A Typical Day at the Sanctuary

• Morning: Start with breakfast, then prepare and feed animal food, clean pens, and care for any animals needing medical attention. Assist with maintenance tasks as needed.
• Lunch: usually from 1:00 to 2:00 PM.
• Rest Period: Take a nap or enjoy free time. Depending on the animal’s needs, we might adjust this, and rest time might not always be if urgent care is required.
• Afternoon: Continue feeding and cleaning routines, provide medical care, and maintain common areas.
• Evening: Ensure animals are well-cared for and everything is in order before dinner at 9:00 PM.
• Weekends: Morning tasks only, with afternoons free to relax, enjoy nature, or visit the nearby river.
• Expect to volunteer 30-40 hours per week.

Notes:

• There is an on-site veterinarian, and volunteers can assist only when the vet requires help. For veterinary students, we can coordinate an internship at the sanctuary to provide more in-depth involvement in veterinary activities.
• During summer, schedules may change because of excessive heat. Volunteers have one free day per week, typically on Sunday. On this day, they can travel to the nearest town with the volunteer coordinator to purchase essentials or request the team to buy specific items during general shopping trips. It is recommended to budget approximately USD 50 per week for personal expenses.

Internet: Wi-Fi is available at the volunteer house but may be intermittent because of the remote location. During the Cordoba city tour, the local coordinator can assist volunteers purchase a SIM card, which they can charge and use.

Laundry: Volunteers can use on-site laundry facilities weekly or visit a nearby town for additional services.

Accommodations: The volunteer house accommodates up to four volunteers in a shared gender bedroom with bunk beds and a private bathroom. Volunteers can bring a sleeping bag for added comfort. A communal kitchen is available. The house, located directly at the project site, allows volunteers to walk to their daily tasks. The sanctuary operates off the grid, with solar energy providing electricity and water sourced from a well powered by a fuel pump. A beautiful river nearby offers an ideal spot for bathing and swimming, especially during the hot season from November to March.

Food: The volunteer program provides three vegan meals daily, prepared with fresh, local ingredients. Volunteers also contribute to meal preparation and house cleaning duties, promoting a sense of community.
